Privacy policy

This policy covers the Web Diagnostic website and the Web Diagnostic Chrome extension. Both send your requests to the same diagnostic server.

What is sent

Only when you press DIAGNOSE, the website address you typed (or, in the extension, the address of the tab you are looking at, which you can edit first) is sent over HTTPS to the diagnostic server. The extension removes the query string and fragment from the pre-filled address before showing it, and the server discards the query string and fragment of every address it receives. Nothing is sent in the background, and no browsing history is read or collected.

What the server does with it

The server looks up the domain name, connects to the site you asked about (a HEAD or GET request for the headers only; page content is never downloaded), checks its TLS certificate, follows redirects, and returns the measurements to you. It refuses addresses that point to private or internal networks.

What is stored

Nothing about your requests is stored. The web server has no access log. The application does not log the addresses you test; in rare error cases its log may contain the hostname (never the path or query) of the site being tested. To enforce a rate limit, your IP address is held in the server's memory for up to one minute and is never written to disk. The hosting provider may keep network-level records outside our control.

What is not done

There are no accounts, cookies, analytics, advertising or trackers. Data is not sold, shared or used for anything other than returning your result.

Permissions of the Chrome extension

"activeTab" lets the extension read the address of the current tab, only after you click its icon, to pre-fill the box. The single host permission lets the popup send the request to the diagnostic server.
